By now you know that I center Black stories, truth, and wisdom every day on Aretha Franklin’s interwebs. I don’t need a special holiday to do it. I had some amazing experiences this Juneteenth and was able to help folks process some pretty big things. In one of my workshops after some serious complicating of public narratives about Abraham Lincoln an attendee said, “Harriet Tubman was more of an Emancipator than Lincoln.” Yep, just like that. Harriet, a disabled enslaved woman, freed herself from chattel enslavement (with community support). Harriet trekked back to Maryland at least 11 different times to free 70 more Black folk. Harriet enlisted in the Union army and was one (if not the first) woman to serve as a military strategist during the Combahee River Raid. She worked alongside enslaved Black folx and in one day helped free 750 of them. She is indeed the Greatest of Emancipators. I don’t need a $20 bill to remind me of that. If yall learn nothing else across my platforms you gonna learn how essential it is to listen to Black women/femmes/trans folk and learn from Black women/femmes/transfolk. #ForHarriet #HarrietTubman #blackwomenepistemology #womanist
