Reeva Steenkamp, 29, was a law graduate, model, and passionate advocate against gender-based violence. She was known for her intelligence, warmth, strength, and ambition. On 14 February 2013, Reeva was shot and killed by her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius, at his home in Pretoria. After years of legal proceedings and appeals, he was ultimately convicted of murder and sentenced to 13 years and 5 months in prison. In 2024, after serving just over eight years, he was released on parole. He has maintained that he did not intend to kill her. Reeva’s death became one of the most high-profile femicide cases in South Africa and around the world, igniting global conversations about intimate partner violence, accountability, and justice. Evil prevails when the upright do nothing to change what is wrong- even when standing up for ourselves and others. South Africa has what it takes to model the way forward of resistance for change and today is proof of that.
