Some updates on the changes to workers compensation in NSW.
#workerscompensation #injuredworkers #unions
To everyone who has made a submission to our inquiry into the Labor government’s planned cuts to workers compensation entitlements, thank you. Your stories are powerful and impactful and I have read every single one.
Our next hearing is next Tuesday, 7 October.
Together, with your advocacy, I feel confident we can win this and create a workers compensation system that’s fair and puts the rights and needs of injured workers first.
Premium updates for Workers Compensation in NSW — 2026–27

A 1099 independent contractor is a person who is in an independent business for themselves, typically they are self employed.
.
Businesses will intentionally misclassify you as a “1099 employee” be sue they don’t want to pay legally required wages, pay for workers compensation, or pay taxes (yes, it’s a form of tax evasion and it’s a federal offense.)
.
Misclassified employees may be entitled to significant financial compensation from the business who did this to them. Talk to a lawyer if it’s happening to you.

The @nswnationals have secured significant improvements to Labor’s Workers Compensation proposals, delivering certainty for employers, stronger protections for injured workers, and greater stability for the scheme.
Why would we ever want to pay someone when they’re cheating workers and cheating the state? When contractors violate our wage laws, they skip out on taxes, avoid workers compensation, and put workers at risk. Today I stood with Comptroller Sean Scanlon and our labor partners in support of Senate Bill 268, and then heard the bill at a public hearing in the Labor and Public Employees Committee.
This bill would allow the Comptroller to pause state payments to contractors under investigation for prevailing wage violations until the issue is resolved. We should not be sending taxpayer dollars to companies that break the law.
Workers in NSW deserve to be treated with respect, which is why I was so disappointed to see the NSW Labor government attempt to push through the Workers Compensation Legislation Amendment Bill, which would push vulnerable frontline workers off critical support for psychological injuries. By doubling the impairment threshold it would make 95% of those suffering permanent psychological injuries no longer qualify for cover.
This devastating reform would put lives at risk.
Workers like nurses, teachers, firefighters, and social workers sacrifice so much for our communities and deserve adequate compensation when
they’re injured at work.
I was relieved to see that this reform did not go through the parliament this week and was sent to a committee for further interrogation.
A big thanks to my colleague Abigail Boyd who led the way for the Greens this week. We will always stand by injured workers and their families.
The labor committee is back in session!
Today, we’re tackling bills related to workers compensation, unemployment insurance, & working moms.

Nothing says “professional growth” like being socially available when your soul is actively trying to leave your body. If you ask me… my social battery deserves some workers compensation 🫠 #workingfromhome #introvert #workingmom #corporatehumor #fakeittillyoumakeit
This week in @nswparliament we’ve seen major reforms to workers compensation pass the upper house - but the @nsw.liberal team have worked to prevent the Labor Government removing support for psychological injuries, and the big topic this week has been how Nazis were allowed to protest out the front of Parliament - and introducing further legislation to ensure we keep our streets safe from fascism.

This morning, District Attorney @SummerStephan joined @noticiasunivisionsd morning show Despierta San Diego to share important information on how to avoid the most common scams after the recent flooding and state of emergency that impacted many San Diegans.
Businesses and scammers who take advantage of consumers by price gouging or other fraud schemes during a state of an emergency can face prosecution.
We are seeing a rise in “affinity fraud” (members of the same group) with unlicensed Spanish speaking fraudsters taking advantage of Spanish speaking homeowners.
A common example is when a Spanish-speaking unlicensed contractor takes a large upfront down payment and does some work but then abandons job. (By law the maximum down payment is $1,000.)
📌Here are some important tips to protect our neighbors:
- Take the time to check out online reviews: YELP, Google, Better Business Bureau – the name of the company and owner should match the review. Don’t give money to a complete stranger without doing your research.
- Do not allow high pressured tactics.
- Improvements over $500 require a written contract.
- If negotiations are in Spanish then the contract should also be in both English and Spanish.
- Do they have a business name, business card, is there a company name on their truck?
- Ask for a reference from someone locally in your neighborhood. Good contractors have satisfied customers who will give them good reviews.
- Check the license with the Contractor’s State License Board https://www.cslb.ca.gov/onlineservices/checklicenseII/checklicense.aspx
- The name of the person you’re speaking with must match.
- Consultants and salespersons must also be licensed.
- The name of the insurance/surety/bond company will be on the CSLB’s license page as well.
- If they are going to have employees, they must also have workers compensation insurance.
⚠️Report any fraud or price gouging to the District Attorney’s Consumer Protection Unit at (619)531-3507.
