ORIGINALITY IS A CROWD PROJECT "The most personal is the most creative." Martin Scorsese said it, as Bong Joon-ho famously recalled when accepting his Oscar, citing it as a vital lesson learned from the master. The rule of thumb, I think, is that if it is all you, and everything you carry, it is original. But it is never as easy as it sounds. In my book, "Write Here Write Now," in a chapter called "Voices in Your Head," I spoke of the need to integrate all the voices you carry -- your parents and your God, your friends and your enemies, the authors you have read, the films you have seen. Right now, I am three chapters away from finishing a biography on a legend. Sitting across from everyone who carries a piece of her story, I realize that a massive legacy is just an incredibly loud, crowded room. There is no getting away from any of these echoes, which often contradict one another. They shape you, and they shape whatever it is you create, whether a novel, a song, or the history of a dynasty. The trick is to hear your own voice in the noise and trust it, even above the din of the devil that keeps yelling you are fucking unoriginal and the angel that keeps tempting you with unicorns and kumbaya. You cannot quiet the crowd in your mind. But you can choose to be the conductor of the symphony, rather than just a member of the audience. #voicesinyourhead #writingprocess #writeherewritenow
