come sit on my sofa and listen to my thesis about Palestinian Yiddish (spoken since at least the 1400s) & the destruction of Jewish identity in order to construct a Sabra identity — Some resources include: YIVO Palestinian Yiddish & Palestinian Yiddish by Mordecai Kosover (1908-1969) — I’m working on a longer article about this so I’ll have a longer citations list that’s easy to share when I’m done 🙂‍↕️

Caption for important context: this is an incredibly disappointing move from YIVO, who have long been a critical source of information on Yiddish culture. It makes sense that many of us who love Yiddishkeit are furious, as it has long been a goal of the Ashkenazi left to reconnect with our culture. Many Jewish leftists, from tbe very beginning, were proud to be in the diaspora, outside of Israel. Israeli authorities, on the other hand, strove to eliminate Yiddish culture (along with other diverse Jewish cultures from around the world) and replace it with a deracinated “Hebrew,” “Isr**li” identity. YIVO has INCLUDED this history in recent exhibitions like “Palestinian Yiddish,” which was put on before Oct 7. After Oct 7, it appears that theyre bowing down to hardline Zionist donors. In doing this, (in my opinion) they are undermining their entire mission of true scholarly research and discussion around our beloved Yiddish history. I sincerely hope they will rerhink this event and post an apology or explanation. #history #education
