Sushant Singh Rajput made his Bollywood debut with Shuddh Desi Romance (2013), he signed a three-film deal with Yash Raj Films (YRF) which was standard practice for newcomers at that time.
The three films were:
1. Shuddh Desi Romance (2013) completed and released.
2. Detective Byomkesh Bakshy (2015) completed and released.
3. A third, was Pani, directed by shekhar kapoor, never happened.
While the exact contract isn't public, several media reports (India Today, NDTV, Mumbai Mirror, and Republic investigations during 2020) suggested key terms:
1. Exclusive binding: Sushant couldn't sign films outside YRF unless they approved or released him.
2. Lock-in period: Between projects, he had to wait for YRF's next film offer.
3. Pay scale structure: His fees were fixed and relatively low compared to market rates, increasing only with each YRF film.
4. Creative control: Scripts and directors were decided by YRF the actor had limited input.
Many newcomers in Bollywood face similar multi-film contracts. They offer stability initially but can also trap artists if the studio stops backing them.
In Hollywood, by contrast, actors on studio contracts (historically) were paid retainers, ensuring income even during downtime something Bollywood rarely does.
