Dollar Brand aka Abdullah Ibrahim opening one of his live concerts (Hamburg, 1977) with a solo flute. The tune called Air is actually taken from his early classic recording African Sketchbook recorded in 1969 and later released by Enja Recorda where he plays both piano & flute (go check it out if you haven't already, beautiful album) The South African Master is known for playing a wide range of wood instruments alongside singing and playing the piano. November 29, Abdullah Ibrahim solo piano in Berlin at J.A.W, RBB Sendesaal. Some place categories are already sold-out so don't sleep 🎟 Link in Bio ☝🏻 ______________ #dollarbrand #abdullahibrahim #livinglegend #master #southafricanmusic #southafrica #jawfamily #november29 #jaw #rbbsendesaal

Abdullah Ibrahim, South Africa’s most influential pianist and jazz composer, turned 90 last year, and around his birthday, he could be seen in New York together with Jason Moran, paying tribute to his role model and mentor Duke Ellington. #enjoyjazz #jazzfestival #jazz
The legendary 89 year old Abdullah Ibrahim on the last night of his SA tour, The Water from an Ancient Well. Playing the opening bars of Mannenberg. Felt like we may have been witnessing a piece of musical history in our corner of Africa last night. ❤️🎶 #abdullahibrahim #maestro #africanjazz
It is a heavy day for the world of music. Today, we say goodbye to a true titan, a healer, and a cultural revolutionary: Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly known as Dollar Brand). He didn't just play the piano; he channeled the very soul, struggle, and resilience of South Africa through 88 keys. His music was a sanctuary during the darkest days of Apartheid, a masterclass in spiritual jazz, and a universal message of peace. From the defiant, hopeful chords of Mannenberg, which became an unofficial anthem of the anti-apartheid movement, to the quiet, beauty of his solo performances - his sound was unmistakable. It carried the warmth of Cape Town, the depth of the blues, and the avant-garde spirit of jazz. Condolences to his loved ones in this time of loss. Thanks to #CarteBlanche producer @katebarry101 for this intimate moment of Ibrahim moments after a performance in 2024. He truly lit up a room 🩵
A giant of jazz 🎹 A storyteller, pianist and visionary whose music carried the spirit of South Africa across the world. We remember Abdullah Ibrahim and celebrate a legacy that will continue to inspire generations. 🖤

One of my favourite Abdullah Ibrahim pieces ‘Blues for a Hip King’
