As the United States prepares to commemorate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Paul Socolar and Tony Heriza remember a bicentennial protest that brought tens of thousands of people to the streets of North Philadelphia in 1976. Led by a coalition of groups including Puerto Rican socialists, Black liberation groups, women’s rights’ advocates and Vietnam veterans, marchers rallied to call for full democracy, equality, jobs, a better standard of living for all, and Puerto Rican independence. Hear more + an update on a potential grad student strike at PENN and a live conversation about how local groups are mobilizing to limit the impact of ICE activity in the region on Around the Block - Sunday Feb 15 at 2:00PM on 106.5 FM in Philly and online at the link in our bio. #abolishice #communitymedia #radiojournalism

Valentine’s Day may be over, but you’ve got plans on Monday, Feb 23rd 🥀🥀🥀 Join us at 9am as we march on Wall Street to demand they pay what they owe and return what they stole to Black and Indigenous New Yorkers. As NYC marks 400 years since colonial elites first brought enslaved Africans to occupied Lenapehoking, we are calling on @govkathyhochul to recommit to reparations for Black New Yorkers and to back the return of Maple Bay to the Onondaga Nation. RSVP to take action at our link in bio and follow our @getfree_nyc pod for more.
This is what community building looks like ✊🏼 When we all join together for humanity and protecting our immigrant neighbors, we can help provide them the justice they deserve. 💕🗽 Thank you to the @rvcdems for rallying the Dem Clubs on the North and South Shore of Nassau County together to join forces to provide support for our immigrant communities. The work doesn’t stop here though! Tell you state senator and Assembly Member to pass #NY4All ‼️ This will help separate the federal and local collusion with ICE so that our tax pay dollars don’t go to tearing immigrant families apart. We won’t stop until the work is done :) Join us at the next one 🌟
Today we had our Dominican Independence Day celebration at the Capitol. Great speeches and well attended. I love their culture.♥️ I lived in Washington Heights in New York City so I learned about the people in my community. They have a beautiful story too. 🇩🇴 #Dominican Independence Day #PennsylvaniaStateCapitol #dominicanrepúblic
Because New Orleans is more than parades and parties. Yes yesterday we learned about the history of alcohol. But we also learned about something deeper, the history of the Civil Rights Movement right here in our city. The resilience. The fight. The legacy. We experienced New Orleans intentionally.
