Pretty Cool Plant Episode 1: Abutilon 🤩
Starting this Pretty Cool Plant series to highlight amazing plants I have or come across “in the wild”. There are always new plants to discover and learn about, and taking a mini deep dive into some of my favorites will hopefully make you a better gardener and plant parent. I’ll also be focusing heavily on edible and native plants in future episodes but this one was too cool to pass up 😋
I planted this Abutilon striatum (Red Vein Indian Mallow) last year and it is still my favorite flowering plant in the entire backyard. Although part of the mallow family, this evergreen perennial is also called a flowering maple for its maple-like foliage and the Chinese lantern for its ornamental flowers. Native to the tropics of Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay, abutilon is hardy in zones 9-11 and can reach heights of 10ft, but it does get kinda leggy if you don’t prune it back every now and then (my yard doesn’t get much direct light) ☹️
The flowers come in all shapes, sizes and colors, but they all have that distinct hanging appearance that resemble old school Christmas ornaments. A pretty cool plant indeed!!

Si chiama Abutilon megapotamicum (pianta sarmentosa) ed è una rampicante elegante, leggera e sempre fiorita (nelle zone miti), perfetta per dare movimento a griglie, ringhiere o il fusto di un albero.
I suoi fiori pendenti, particolarissimi, sembrano piccole lanterne e regalano colore per tantissimo tempo.
✨ Ideale per chi cerca una sorta di rampicante diversa dal solito.

📋 Flowering Maple Care at a Glance

· Light: Full sun to partial shade. Needs bright light indoors.
· Water: Keep soil consistently moist. Water when the top half-inch of soil feels dry.
· Soil: Well-draining, rich potting mix.
· Feeding: Fertilize every 2 weeks during growth.
· Key Tip: Pinch stem tips in spring for a bushier plant with more flowers.
📝 Detailed Growing Guide
· Sun & Placement: For the best flowering, provide at least 6-8 hours of direct sun. It thrives outdoors on a sunny patio or against a south-facing wall. Indoors, place it right by a south-facing window.
· Water & Humidity: Water freely during the growing season but reduce watering in winter. It does not like to dry out completely. Moderate humidity is ideal.
· Soil & Feeding: Use a quality, well-draining potting mix. A balanced, water-soluble fertilizer applied every two weeks during spring and summer supports vigorous growth and blooming.
