a second part to some everyday accommodations that improved my quality of life 👋
what are some accommodations that changed your life, friends? 💭

Why does support for disabled people make some people so angry?
Because a lot of people were taught that fairness means everyone gets the same thing.
But fairness and sameness are not the same.
Accommodations are not special treatment.
They are not an unfair advantage.
They are a way of removing barriers so someone can participate more equally.
And sometimes the discomfort people feel is not really about disabled people getting “too much”.
It is about realising how many people were expected to struggle without help.
The problem is not that disabled people are being supported.
The problem is how often support is treated like something people have to earn through suffering.

“Disabled” is not a bad word. The more we acknowledge that ability exists on a spectrum, and that many people are NOT perfectly able-bodied, the more we reduce stigma for everyone.

Most autistic burnout at work isn’t because of workload.
It’s about unaccommodated nervous systems.
Four accommodations I commonly prescribe for autistic adults to thrive in work environments ⤵️
1️⃣ Reduced social load, not reduced responsibility
Fewer meetings. Clear agendas. Asynchronous communication.
-Cognitive capacity is preserved when constant social decoding isn’t required.
2️⃣ Control over sensory input
Lighting, sound, seating, temperature, headphones, camera-off policies.
- Regulation precedes productivity — always.
3️⃣ Predictable task expectations
Explicit priorities. Written instructions. Defined “done.”
- Ambiguity drains autistic energy faster than effort ever will.
4️⃣ Flexible pacing and recovery time
Modified schedules, protected breaks, realistic turnaround times.
-Burnout isn’t prevented by pushing harder — it’s prevented by respecting limits.
If your workplace burnout feels confusing, chronic, or “out of proportion,” it’s likely structural not personal.

There could be other reasons an accommodation can’t be provided, but the excuse that all the other students will want it to? Nah— let’s retire that.
Kids will get it if you teach them about neurodiversity and the difference between equity and equality. They might need reminders, but it’s simply not an excuse to deprive another student of their right to learn and access the classroom appropriately.

Disability actually makes your life easier.
You all benefit from the innovations and designs that have been created to restore the dignity and independence of people living with disability.
Text messages, SMS, audio-books, ramps, closed captions, electric toothrushes ... just to name a few.
These designs and accommodations allow for a more accessible world, for EVERYONE.
Disability is the ONLY marginalised and minority group that EVERYONE will have the pleasure of being part of in their life, either temporarily or permanently.
I challenge you to look for all the ways you benefit from disability in your daily life.

Medication is NOT the only option for ADHD management. I can earnestly say from my own experience, that if I hadn’t incorporated for nonmedication options and behavioral management with my medication, I probably wouldn’t have been able to get through school. It’s so important to build those good pathways and habits so we don’t have to use or rely as heavily on medication ❤️

Are there nights where she wants me to be in her room still? Of course and I will stay in her room for a while. But this got us out of the phase of me needing to be in her room for hours on end! I’ve linked things similar to all of this on the blog post! #neurospicy #neurodivergent #accommodations #autismacceptance
If you’re going to claim that you have “quiet bathrooms” or that you are @hiddendisabilities_anz aligned, perhaps a little more codesign should go in to planning those spaces. The last thing I needed when overwhelmed and overstimulated was the have to have nowhere safe to place a bag or anywhere to dispose of sanity products @sydneyairport #actuallyautistic #accessibility #hiddendisability #accommodations #autism
An IEP should MAKE SENSE!
They're supposed to be written for families...⤵️
and kids as YOU are the consumer.
And yet, I continue to see longer and longer IEPs
with more boxes and drop down menus.
We've lost our way and need to
get back to the consumer when it comes
to writing IEPs.
A great education plan must be person-centered
and understandable.
This is why you need to stand up and ASK for
IEPs written in language that's useful
and relevant for your child's NEEDs.
This is why, you need to stand up as teachers
and join together to get documents that
are EASIER to use, instead of harder.
If you're writing and reading IEPs,
you already know it's time for change.
Join our growing tribe of teachers, parents,
providers looking for REAL change.
