According to Advaita, the longing for a soulmate does not arise from love but from a subtle sense of incompleteness. The mind feels divided and imagines that another person can fill what seems missing. When two such minds meet, there may be attraction, comfort, or emotional intensity, but this is not true unity. It is dependence disguised as love. Shankara points out that wholeness cannot be found in another person. It is discovered only when the false sense of separation dissolves. When one knows oneself as complete awareness, the search for completion ends. Relationship then changes its nature. It is no longer a necessity or a rescue, but a free sharing without fear or clinging. Adi Shankara’s Life Adi Shankara — the Guru to whom we Hindus owe so much — was born in Kaladi, Kerala, to Shivaguru and Aryamba. By the age of eight, he had already mastered the Vedas… and expressed a deep desire to take Sannyasa. But his father had passed away, and his mother couldn’t bear to let him go. Still, she agreed — but only after he made a solemn promise: “If ever you call, I will come. And I will perform your last rites.” And he kept that promise. Shankara left home and journeyed to Omkareshwar, on the sacred banks of the Narmada, where he met his Guru — Govindapada Acharya, a disciple of the great Gaudapada, author of the Mandukya Karika, a key text in Advaita Vedanta. When the Guru asked, “Who are you?” Shankara didn’t give his name — instead, he sang what became immortal: “Mano buddhi ahamkara chittani naham... Shivoham, Shivoham.” — the soul-stirring verses of the Nirvana Shatakam. At the time, India was filled with intellectual tension — between Vedic schools like Sankhya, Nyaya, and Mimamsa, and non-Vedic ones like Buddhism and Jainism. With brilliance, humility, and clarity, Adi Shankara debated scholars across the land and established the profound philosophy of Advaita — non-duality. But that was just the beginning.
