The Hollywood actors strike isn’t about rich movie stars fighting for more money, it’s about “working class” actors, Sean Gunn said. Gunn, known for his roles in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and Gilmore Girls, spoke to The National’s Ian Hanomansing about what’s behind the labour dispute. “It’s for the working class people, the writers and the actors who are trying to pay their bills, trying to pay their rent, trying to pay their mortgages,” he said. Last week, 160,000 SAG-AFTRA actors walked off the job, joining 11,500 Writers Guild of America members who have been on the picket line since May 2. One of the key issues is residual payments from streaming services — basically, the money they make long-term for repeated use of their work. In the streaming model, the union says those payments have dropped dramatically, making it hard for many actors to earn a living. In his case, Gunn says that despite Gilmore Girls being one of Netflix’s most popular shows, he earns more in residuals from basic cable reruns. Previous Hollywood strikes have lasted months, and the Writers Guild of America’s 11,000 members had already been on strike since early May before 160,000 members of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists joined them this week. SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher told USA Today her union was prepared for a long one — perhaps through the end of the year. “Right now, we discussed what it would cost if it went for six months, so we’re looking for the long haul,” Drescher said. “The gravity of a commitment like this is not lost on any of us. It’s major.
