I was supposed to be Simba. I was supposed to hold a split while another dancer lifted me into the air and slowly turned. It was the Circle of Life. It was supposed to move us all. But over the course of that year, I gained too much weight. I was no longer lift-able or like-able (mainly to myself). The 90s and early 2000s were riddled with rules. One of which was: Good girls must stay small. I’m so thankful my good little girl didn’t get that memo. She uses her body to dance and spin and flap. Because of autism, her brain makes a request and her body doesn’t deny it. How beautiful, and enviable, is that? The rules were wrong—we never were. Good girls are allowed to take up space, and dance off-beat, and grow in any way we want. We don’t need a center stage moment to be considered worthy. #millennial #actuallyautistic #relatablecontent #autisticgirl
