Akragas'ın en ünlü sikkesi, Kartacalıların şehri yıkmasından kısa bir süre önce, yaklaşık MÖ 409-406 yıllarında basılan devasa 42 gramlık dekadrahmdır. Sadece beş kalıptan (iki ön yüz, üç arka yüz) basılan sikkeler son derece nadirdir ve çoğu müzelerde olmak üzere yaklaşık on örneği bilinmektedir. #akragas #sicilya #decadrachm #sikke #coins

2500 Years of Crabs-12 Civilizations The crab lives where the water ends and the land begins. In the ancient Mediterranean basin, metalsmiths rendered this shell in silver. In the Sicilian city of Akragas, mints struck the crab figure onto coins with flawless proportions. The Romans engraved the same form into agate seal stones. Potters in Alexandria adorned the tops of their clay oil lamps with this multi-legged anatomy. Instead of horns, crab claws were added to the heads of stone-carved ocean deities. On the opposite shores of the Pacific Ocean, artisans shaped clay. Peru's Moche culture fused human faces directly onto crab bodies. This hybrid anatomy's clearly visible in ceramic vessels discovered at Sipán. The indigenous peoples of Colombia and Mexico modeled round earthen pots after crabs' backs. Workshops in Costa Rica melted gold to cast horseshoe crabs. The cast gold perfectly imitated the animal's natural armor. In Asia, craftsmanship focused on the creature's mechanical structure. Using fire and hammer, Japanese blacksmiths forged iron sculptures with articulated joints and movable legs. On the battlefield, a samurai marched with two massive crab claws mounted atop his helmet. Carving ivory, Japanese artisans created button-like netsuke that'd complement clothing. In Chinese porcelain kilns, soup bowls, lidded boxes, and water droppers were molded to a crab's dimensions. Jade was carved into miniature snuff bottles. In the nineteenth century, English jewelers set diamonds and rubies into gold crab brooches. Bronze workshops in Italy cast inkwells matching the life-size dimensions of this creature. The crab’s broad back concealed the ink, while its inward-curving claws held the pens.

WHOLE STORY!! The Brazen Bull was an ancient execution device said to be used in 6th century BCE Greece, most famously by Phalaris, the tyrant of Akragas in Sicily. It was a hollow bronze statue of a bull, designed to trap a person inside. A fire was lit beneath it, slowly heating the metal until the victim was burned alive. What made it especially terrifying was its design pipes inside the bull turned human screams into sounds that resembled the roaring of a bull, making it seem like the statue itself was alive. According to ancient sources, the device was invented by an Athenian craftsman named Perillos. He presented it to Phalaris as a tool to punish criminals and intimidate enemies. But legend says Phalaris was horrified by the cruelty and ordered Perillos himself to be the first person placed inside the bull to “test” his own invention. The fire was lit briefly, torturing him but not killing him. Perillos was later executed by being thrown from a cliff. Some stories also claim that Phalaris himself eventually died in the Brazen Bull after being overthrown, though historians debate this and believe it may be symbolic rather than factual. Much of what we know about the Brazen Bull comes from ancient writers, and while parts of the story may be exaggerated, it remains one of history’s most chilling examples of how cruelty, power, and irony collide. #BrazenBull #HiddenHistory #AncientHistory #ExecutionDevice #CruelHistory #HistoryFacts
