Alex Webb (born January 5, 1952, in San Francisco, California) is an American photographer and photojournalist, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in color street and documentary photography. He began his career working in black and white before moving decisively into color in the late 1970s, a shift that would define his visual identity. Webb was nominated to Magnum Photos in 1976, became an associate member in 1978, and a full member in 1979, with the support of senior Magnum photographers including Bruce Davidson and Marc Riboud. Early in his career, he was mentored by the legendary art director and teacher Alexey Brodovitch, whose influence can be seen in Webb’s strong sense of composition, structure, and visual tension. First, it tells a complete story on its own. Secondly, it shows a duality of life: pain and sorrow can & do exist in beautiful settings.
