VC no TG 📸🧡 Alguém já tinha visto um urubu e um carcará trocando carícias? 🦅 A relação entre as aves, chamada Allopreening, é comum em determinadas espécies, como psitacídeos, por exemplo. No entanto, também ocorre entre animais que não têm parentesco, mas convivem próximos uns dos outros, hábito tido como ‘Allopreening intraespecífico’. A ‘carícia’ é um tipo de limpeza, quando uma das aves retira os parasitas da plumagem do outro indivíduo. O comportamento conta ainda com o alisamento das penas, graças ao bom convívio das espécies e pelo posicionamento hierárquico delas. “Além de auxiliar na remoção de parasitas - como ácaros e piolhos, e na manutenção das penas, essa troca de ‘carícias’ também tem um papel social importante, pois demonstra tolerância ou cooperação entre indivíduos”, explica o ornitólogo Luciano Lima. Take me back to the night I met them 🤎 After watching the parents engage in this tender ritual, it’s now the turn of the two young Barred Owls to take part in it: mutual feather preening (known as allopreening). Much more than simple grooming, this behavior strengthens social and family bonds, keeps the plumage in perfect condition, and helps remove parasites. This moment deeply moved me. I’ve known them since they were tiny (do you remember the photo of the three juveniles lined up on a branch?), and today, these adolescents almost have the look of adults. Yet, if you look closely, a faint down still lingers on their heads, a subtle reminder of their earliest days. I feel incredibly privileged to have witnessed this rare behavior several times this year, in the deepest intimacy of the forest with them. . . Après avoir observé les parents s’adonner à ce tendre rituel, c’est maintenant au tour des deux (sur les trois) jeunes chouettes rayées de le pratiquer : le lissage mutuel des plumes (allopreening en anglais). Bien plus qu’un simple toilettage, ce geste renforce les liens sociaux et familiaux, tout en assurant un plumage impeccable et en éliminant les parasites. Ce moment m’a profondément émue. Je les ai connus tout petits (vous vous souvenez de la photo des trois juvéniles alignés sur une branche ?) et, aujourd’hui, ces adolescents ont presque une allure d’adultes. Pourtant, si l’on regarde attentivement, un léger duvet persiste encore sur leur tête, souvenir subtile de leurs premiers jours. Barred Owls in love 🤎 Even though I’ve had the chance to witness this tender moment in Barred Owls a few times, known as allopreening (the mutual grooming of feathers), it remains a rare sight. This behavior helps strengthen social bonds and may also help with grooming in hard-to-reach areas. Unlike preening, which is a solitary activity focused on individual feather care, allopreening relies on interaction between birds. It makes it all the more exceptional to see them engage in this behavior at the top of an old barn. I never would have imagined an owl landing there… let alone the male coming to join her. Witnessing moments like these brings an indescribable sense of peace. Chouettes rayées en amour 🤎 Même si j’ai déjà eu la chance d’observer à quelques reprises ce moment de grande tendresse chez les chouettes rayées, appelé allopreening (un lissage mutuel des plumes), cela reste une scène rare. Ce comportement contribue à renforcer les liens sociaux et peut aussi aider à lisser les plumes dans des zones difficiles d’accès. Contrairement au toilettage, qui est une activité solitaire axée sur l’entretien individuel du plumage, l’allopreening repose sur l’interaction entre les oiseaux. C’est d’autant plus exceptionnel de les voir se livrer à cette activité au sommet d’une vieille grange. Je n’aurais jamais imaginé voir une chouette s’y poser… et encore moins voir le mâle venir la rejoindre.
