If you’ve flown into the Bay Area in summer or fall, you might have noticed bright pink, orange, green colored checkers from your window. These are San Francisco Bay area’s salt ponds! They played an important role in protecting the inland from floods and were a home to diverse wildlife. Once the Gold rush started in California, huge pieces of the marsh were industrialized by corporations to produce salt and serve the masses. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬 Today, one of the world’s biggest salt producers, Cargill owns the existing commercial salt ponds and continues to produce salt while environmental organisations push for restoration. In 2003, Don Edwards SF Bay Area Wildlife Refuge bought a portion of the land and began restoring these salt ponds back into wetlands and marshes. The restored wetlands will protect the bay from rising sea levels and restore wildlife habitat. The salt ponds we are able to access today belong to that land. Yes you would be as surprised as us - Alviso Marina County Park is the gateway to Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge - place of key historic importance in Silicon Valley. Surely didn’t know this place existed But when our fellow #instagramcreators introduced this, we wanted to learn more , sharing some things we learned: 1. Once a bustling area with several successful businesses 2. Pathways and boardwalks are the old thriving marina in heart of Silicon Valley 3. Alviso was the port of San Jose and all produce, other exports passed through this port which was then transported throughout the world 4. Salt flats - this area of the Bay is prime for natural sun and wind to produce salt. Ocean water comes in and gets stuck in pools which get evaporated by the sun leaving behind salt 5. The pink color comes from a salt tolerant algae (Dunaliella Salina) present in the lake 6. Color aids in salt making process by absorbing more light 7. It contains 20 acres of Bayside park with pink salt ponds and marshes. The pink color looks the best during midday when there is bright sun. There are lots of activities to do here for outdoor enthusiasts such as Fishing, Non Power Boating, Power Boating, Biking, Hiking and Walking. ‼️‼️‼️IMPORTANT I only recently saw the website mention not to go near the salt pond. When we went the signs were only on the shore which we NEVER crossed. You can see where the signs are in my other reel. So it looks like the park authorities have made some changes. : Edit- I visited Alviso Marina County Park for the first time the day I recorded this and didn’t know it was forbidden to walk on or touch the salt ponds. Since I saw so many people walking on them, even with a ranger nearby and no trespassing signs in sight, I assumed it was okay to do so. Thank you to everyone in the comments who kindly educated me about this. Please, if you visit, be mindful and avoid walking on the salt ponds. Just enjoy exploring from a distance. Caption- OMG! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this salt pond! I visited Alviso hoping to see the red ponds, but instead, the water had dried/drained up, revealing the salt beneath. It felt like stepping onto another planet! I made sure to go at sunset, and let me tell you, it was one of the most breathtaking sunsets I’ve seen!
