Paint can’t go up without pre-production; pre-pro if you’re familiar. After we get artwork in the door, we first trace it on a tablet and then blow it up to scale in manageable smaller sections where we pattern the artwork on butcher paper. Patterning means burning tiny holes into butcher paper using our tried and true electro-pounce machine. The electro-pounce pen conducts tiny bits of electricity onto the metal-backed butcher paper burning tiny holes into it – creating a perforated roadmap. We take that roadmap to the wall and hit it with bags of charcoal to transfer that outline onto the wall. After all this is done, and the paint colors are mixed, we get to paint! #alwayshandpaint #20colossalyears

Howdy Calgary! Join me on Saturday, June 15 at @helloarcade for my Showcard and Sign Painting workshop! This full-day workshop teaches the fundamentals of traditional sign painting. Participants will learn about best practices, sign painting tools, and have the opportunity to paint up to four styles of alphabet using water-based paint, with a demonstration on how to use professional enamel paint. This is Betty, she belongs to the @growingcommunities farmers’ market in Stoke Newington and she sells coffees during market days. Her owners asked if I could make her sparkle, so I turned up armed with just a wax pencil and a bag of paints to make it happen. I mixed influences from Indian truck painting and Dutch still life oil paintings, working off the cuff and negotiating with a tricky uneven surface to bring it together over several sessions of painting. I love working like this. It exemplifies what I drew me to sign painting all those years ago. Making something that could just be functional become beautiful using only a handful of tools. I’m leaving behind a joyful piece of playful creativity that functions for the market on Saturdays but also sits as a piece of public art for passersby to enjoy for the rest of the week. #alwayshandpaint #Signpainting #growingcommunities #coffeevan
