The bakery pays tribute to its start in Denmark in 1991 by offering a local take on classic Danish dessert options. “The Danish hospitality is here… when you walk into the doors,” said Josh Pickens, president of Ole & Steen U.S. Ole & Steen is known as Denmark’s favorite all-day bakery, and the company brings that legacy to New York through its expansive, non-dessert exclusive menu. “Everything we do here is handmade,” explained Pickens, “we’ve had Danish bakers come over, set the menu and train our entire team on how to bake in the Danish way.” Cakes, tarts and cookies are best enjoyed with a coffee or tea at Ole & Steen. Their coffee menu has expanded rapidly over the past six years, with a new addition coming this summer. Happy National Cat Day! Did you know that a stray cat named Ned was the first non-human to cross the Brooklyn Bridge after its construction in 1883? Or that a blind cat named Jerry saved the Brooklyn City Hall from burning down in a fire? These are the types of stories you’ll hear on NYC’s newest tour for cat and history lovers alike, Cats About Town. Led by cat historian and master storyteller Peggy Gavan, Cats About Town is “NYC’s first walking tour for cat lovers.” Gavan tells stories about the city through an unexpected lens you won’t find anywhere else: that of the historical felines who once resided here. “I tell the history of the city, in this case today Brooklyn Heights, through true cat stories from the late 1800s to the early 1900s” said Gavan before the tour began. Despite how fantastical some of the stories may seem, all of them were written about in newspapers long past. Two guests, Carlos and Christina from Queens and Brooklyn, respectively, found out about the tour through Instagram and were excited to learn more about the city and some historical cats. “We’re just cat people,” said Carlos while sporting a cat graphic tee with the text “This is how you make biscuits,” a reference to what cat owners call it when cats “knead” with their paws on a soft surface. For cat lovers, whether or not they spot a cat isn’t important. To simply celebrate their favorite felines is worth the trek. A new bar menu just launched at Stretch Pizza, a Flatiron District pizzeria that stretches far beyond standard pizzas. Serving up classic, New York-style pies for over a year now, Chef Wylie Dufresne thought that his restaurant’s happy hour deserved its own menu. On weekdays from 4-6 p.m., customers can enjoy a brand-new happy hour experience with Stretch’s new bar menu food options. “We’ve got five different bar menu items that we think will pair really well with the various drink offerings that we have,” Dufrense shared. The new menu includes several twists on classic bar foods including Pesto Mozzarella Sticks, Stretch Doritos and a Pickle Plate. Chef Dufresne also included dishes inspired by his culinary career in which he received a James Beard Award for Best Chef: New York. Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream, located at 88 W. Houston St. and 2 Rivington St., is collaborating with hand-crafted Italian vinegar producer Carandini to create four brand-new, limited-edition balsamic glaze-inspired ice cream flavors. “Carandini is a great product from Italy, they make different kinds of balsamic as well as glazes so we thought it would be perfect to try something different this summer”, said Pri, the director of operations at Morgenstern’s. The unique combination of flavors makes for the perfect sweet and savory treat topped with perfectly paired acetic glazes. Launching this past weekend, the first 50 customers who arrived at Morgenstern’s received a free scoop of the balsamico ice cream with ricotta and strawberry jam. Three other combinations at Morgenstern’s will be available including strawberry pistachio pesto ice cream paired with wild berries glaze, olive oil and chocolate with an orange glaze and salt and pepper pine nut topped with a pear and walnuts glaze. Trump Tower was shut down to visitors Wednesday afternoon after a protester spray-painted the letters “U.S.A.” over a seal bearing the name of President Donald Trump. A protester from the Extinction Rebellion strode into Trump Tower on 5th Avenue just after noon on April 23 and spray-painted the letters in green over the circular 45 sign in the lobby filled with tourists. The perpetrator then crouched and held a cloth sign reading “game over.” It was Extinction Rebellion’s latest action tied to Earth Day. Tuesday, organization members vandalized a Tesla dealership to protest Trump adviser Elon Musk. They later interrupted a New York City Ballet performance to voice a plea over climate change. Members of the Secret Service at Trump Tower on Wednesday immediately detained the protester and slapped him in cuffs. Andreas Verrios (@mrnycsubway) found his true calling holding a camera on the subway after inspiration struck on his morning commute as a full-time finance lawyer, finding wonder and creativity on his journey to Wall Street. The New York City-based photographer goes by Mr. NYC Subway on social media, with more than 2 million followers on TikTok and 300,000 followers on Instagram. When he’s not running into celebrities like Ed Sheran for an impromptu photoshoot or collaborating with other creatives, he’s turning strangers into models for brand campaigns such as Banana Republic. “I don’t need to bring the positive energy. I don’t need to bring a performance to the subway. It’s already here, like it already exists. You know, and it’s the people of New York, if you look around on the train car, you’ll see someone knitting a blanket, you’ll see someone you know writing poetry, dancing, you know, even people’s fashion, but it’s New Yorkers,” said Verrios. Starting off with iPhone street photography, Verrios became “obsessed.” Now shooting with a Canon DSLR camera, his obsession has become his successful and passionate side hustle. His passion didn’t start to gain notoriety until, ironically, he went underground. “That’s why I chose the New York City subway, because that’s where my switch goes on,” Verrios said. “Like when I get on the subway, and I get in my creative zone, that’s where I feel it the most.” Approaching strangers with a positive attitude and smile, Verrios turns everyday New Yorkers into models. Nearly 15,000 nurses in NYC are officially on strike after walking off the job due to failed contract talks on Monday morning. It marks the largest nurses’ strike in NYC history. Hospitals affected by the strike include Mount Sinai locations, Montefiore and NewYork-Presbyterian.
