AMOC — the Atlantic current that acts as the planet’s heat pump — is weakening. And a study from the Potsdam Institute published last week found something that changes everything. Once it collapses, it doesn’t come back. Here’s the threshold that matters: 350 parts per million of CO₂. At that level or above, a collapse becomes permanent. We crossed 350 in 1988. We’re sitting at 430 today. Without the Gulf Stream: US East Coast winters get dramatically more extreme. Europe loses up to 7°C of warmth. Storm patterns shift. Agriculture collapses across entire regions. And when AMOC collapses, the Southern Ocean stops absorbing carbon and starts releasing it — up to 83 gigatonnes back into the atmosphere. The fossil fuel industry has known about AMOC since the 1980s. Same decade we crossed 350. The EPA just repealed its authority to regulate the emissions driving all of it. #AMOC #ClimateChange #OceanCurrents #Meteorologist #ElNino
As we continue to burn oil, gas and coal, our oceans are warming, and Arctic ice is melting. Scientists have found that this is putting our oceans’ currents flows at risk, with potentially catastrophic consequences.
Does The Day After Tomorrow, depict real events? 🌊🗽 In the 2004 Hollywood blockbuster, The Day After Tomorrow, Dennis Quaid plays a paleoclimatologist who predicts the collapse of an ocean circulation system with devastating consequences. Was the movie a classic case of bad science in Hollywood or strangely prescient? Turns out the world’s oceans are warming at an alarming rate, with disastrous consequences for marine life and humanity. The ocean system depicted in The Day After Tomorrow, known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation or AMOC, could be one culprit. Tap link in bio to learn more #Ocean, #science, #AMOC, #sealevel, #biodiversity, #sea, #sealife, #oceans, #marine, #marinespecies, #film, #hollywood, #sci-fi, #STEM,
Did you know the UK could start seeing frozen winters with temperatures of up to -20 degrees? Back in 1962, we experienced one of the harshest winters ever—and they could become more common A huge system of ocean currents called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation ensures that Europe stays warm enough But it might be on the brink of collapse Deputy editor Ellen Halliday explains how bad the situation could be You can read her full piece via the link in our bio #climatecrisis #climatechange #amoc #bigfreeze #science
A major climate system could be on the brink of collapse decades ahead of schedule, and will unleash global devastation – that’s the latest warning by scientists on the state of our planet. Susanne Ditlevsen, one of the researchers of the study, said “We did not expect to find such an early indication of collapse. The closer you are to the tipping point, the more accurate our predictions will be. Of course, I hope we are wrong, I sincerely hope we are wrong.” #atlanticocean #atlantic #climatesystem #climatechange #climate #earth #oceans #amoc #globaltemperatures #currents
No, AMOC won’t collapse next year. **I’m reposting a video on the topic I originally produced in July 2023 because there’s a few viral climate doom videos on the topic currently making their rounds on social media** The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC for short, is a large system of ocean currents that influences climate in North America and Europe. It is currently slowing down, and several studies have theorized it could collapse if climate change is not addressed quickly enough. The most recent statistical analysis, that I discuss in this video, points towards a collapse between 2050 and 2100, but it’s important to note that it isn’t widely accepted within the scientific community due to insufficient and discredited evidence. A collapse is still possible, but a recent IPCC suggests it wouldn’t occur as instantaneously and catastrophically like a lot of the media around it suggests. I’m looking at you, “Day After Tomorrow”. Scientists agree that the best thing we can do to prevent irreversible tipping points, like AMOC collapsing, is to force the world to begin to phase out fossil fuels and transition funding from that industry into renewables. It won’t be easy, but it’s necessary to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. There are a bunch of easy calls to action to do just linked in my bio, so don’t give up! #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateEmergency #GlobalWarming #AMOC #AMOCCollapse #TippingPoint
🛣️ #AMOC #Climat2050 #Meteo #futur #2050
Extreme winters are linked to weaker ocean currents. A collapse of the Atlantic circulation would mean a massive cooling of Europe.
Atlantic Ocean current heading for a collapse, according to study Could the Atlantic Ocean current collapse in real life like in the movie ‘The Day After Tomorrow’? Technically, yes 😅 — here’s what a new study suggests (with @mralexalba) #science #ocean #atlantic #amoc #globalwarming
There’s increasing scientific consensus that the melting arctic ice, caused by human pollution, is flooding the North Atlantic with millions of tons of freshwater which appears to interfere with the AMOC current - a vital system which circulates sea water across parts of the world. Some scientists believe its total collapse could spell arctic winters for Europe. #AMOC #ClimateChange #AtlanticOcean #GlobalWarming #Channel4News
A critical Atlantic Ocean current system may be nearing a “tipping point,” according to a new study. It echoes findings from a paper last year that warn of changes to the circulation — with impacts for weather around the world. Here’s what you need to know about AMOC. #news #climatechange #AMOC
🌊 THE OCEAN IS BOILING FROM BELOW 🌊 Greenland is melting. That freshwater is blocking heat from escaping. Now it's building underneath sitting directly against glaciers eating them from below. A new peer reviewed study says +2°C of subsurface warming could hit within a decade. This isn't surface temperature. This is what's happening where you can't see it. #NorthAtlantic #Greenland #OceanWarming #AMOC #ScienceNews #AboveTheNormNews
