Ever wondered why some colour just work while others feel off? It’s becaues of how our brains process colour.
Our eyes have specialised cone cells that detect red, green, and blue light, and the way these signals interact shapes how we perceive harmony and contrast. The colour wheel is a reflection of how our vision interprets relationships between hues.
Analogous colours (next to each other on the wheel) feel naturally cohesive because they share similar wavelengths, making them easy on the eyes.
Complementary colours (opposites on the wheel) create contrast because they activate different cone cells at the same time, making each colour appear more vibrant.
Monochrome (shades of the same colour) feel sophisticated and balanced because they limit visual noise, keeping the focus on texture and form.
Dyad colours (two steps apart) create a mix of harmony and contrast, making them feel intentional but not too predictable.
Hope this helps, let me know if you want to know more!

🌈Happy International Colour Day, colour
lovers! 🌈
I’m resharing my most loved reel from last year to celebrate this colourful day, the colour wheel and share 3 key schemes using pastels:
Triadic:
3 colours equally space around the wheel creates a dynamic and more complex scheme
Complementary:
2 colours opposite each other makes a high contrast, bold statement
Analogous:
3 colours next to each other will give you a harmonious and calm palette
You can use this theory as a helpful starting point to create a colour scheme if you need a bit of guidance, or just totally ignore it and do what you love, whatever works for you.
Enjoy the magical day of colour!
Give this a like and a share if you found this helpful ✨

Analogous colours sit next to each other on the colour wheel and THIS is why they work so well together ⬇️
From a scientific perspective, the harmonious effect of analogous colours in an outfit is explained through the way our eyes and brain perceive colours.
This is because of the way light, colour receptors in our eyes, and the brain’s processing work together. The shared wavelengths and smooth transitions between analogous colours create a sense of balance and unity to others.
Some analogous pairings you should try...
Yellow, Orange, Red
Blue, teal, Green
Red, Purple, Pink
Green, lime, Yellow
Orange, Red-Orange, Red

The “Secret Sauce” to glowing watercolors... (It’s not more paint!) 🥑✨

🥑
Ever wonder why some watercolor paintings look like they have a light turned on inside them, while others look flat?
🥑
The answer isn’t “better paint.” It’s Transparency + Analogous Colors. 🎨
🥑
If you grab “Green” straight from the tube, you get a flat sticker. But if you layer neighbors on the color wheel, you get vibration.
🥑
Here is the exact layering strategy I used in this video: 1️⃣ The Base: I flood the shape with bright Yellow first. This acts as a backlight. 💡 2️⃣ The Form: While wet, I drop in Green. Because the yellow is underneath, the green instantly looks warmer and richer. 3️⃣ The Harmony: For the seed, I used Ochre. Why? Because Ochre is a cousin to both yellow and green, tying the whole palette together. 4️⃣ The Magic Touch: A final Gold Yellow glazing over the top to unite everything.

Analogous Colour Schemes: Three to five colours directly next to each other on the colour wheel. Creates soft, lower-contrast images with a harmonious feel.

Analogous colors are the secret 🤫
If you want your edits to feel rich, cohesive, and intentional, without being loud, try an analogous color scheme. It’s all about using colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel, creating a smooth, natural flow that’s easy on the eyes.
Most people chase contrast without thinking about harmony. But when you stick to a tight range of hues, you let light, mood, and detail take center stage. Analogous grading is perfect for dreamy edits, nature shots, and cinematic portraits.
⸻
What is an analogous scheme?
• 2–4 colors right next to each other on the wheel
• Naturally harmonious, great for evoking a specific mood
Popular sets:
→ Green + Teal + Blue
→ Red + Orange + Yellow
→ Purple + Magenta + Pink
Why it works so well: You get a seamless blend of tones that feel emotionally connected — like they’re part of the same story.
⸻
My Lightroom workflow:
1. Pick a key color (based on mood or subject), then build out 1–2 neighbors
2. Use HSL Hue and Calibration to nudge tones gently into range
3. Reduce or desaturate any outlier hues that break the vibe
4. Use masking to preserve soft transitions and skin tone neutrality
Personally I like to use this color scheme for dreamy landscape shots. They feel balanced and soft on the eye of the observer. A tool you need in your toolbox as a photographer.

Choosing the color scheme🌸
Learning even the basics of color theory and color psychology go a long way. This painting that I am working on is an analogous color pallete(color on a similar end of the wheel). Blue-Purple-Red. But I went for more muted and darker versions of those because the mood I wanted to convey was of sorrow and strength (as opposed to happy/flashy/spring). But I picked a bright Ultramarine blue as an accent color for a pop to just make the whole composition more interesting. The muted gold border can be considered a complement to the purple (opposite on the wheel). Although this is thought out but it doesn't have to be! As long as it looks fun to you, it works.❤

Pink is my fave color and if you reached into my closet without looking, chances are you would pull out something with pink on it.

Analogous colors are three to four colors next to each other on the color wheel. You might find it weird, but when you visually try an outfit together, trust me, it works!!!
