“The fall of Al-Andalus… one of the most painful stories in Muslim history. The divisions in Al-Andalus didn’t start suddenly—they grew over time, and once they began, they kept getting worse. It really began after the collapse of the powerful Umayyad rule in Córdoba. Around 1009–1031, a brutal civil war known as the Fitna of al-Andalus broke out. Different factions—royal family members, generals, and local leaders—started fighting each other for power. This chaos destroyed the central authority of the Umayyad Caliphate. When the dust settled, there was no single ruler left. Instead, Al-Andalus broke into many small independent kingdoms called Taifa kingdoms—like Seville, Toledo, Zaragoza, and Badajoz. Each taifa had its own king, army, and ambitions. And here’s where the real problem deepened: * These taifas didn’t unite against external threats * Many of them fought each other for territory and prestige * Some even paid tribute (parias) to Christian kings for protection * Others allied with Christian rulers against rival Muslim states So instead of one strong, united force, Al-Andalus became divided and vulnerable. Meanwhile, Christian kingdoms like Castile and Aragon took advantage of this weakness.
