It plunges from the towering cliffs of Auyán-tepui, one of the region’s enormous ancient table-top mountains. The water falls from the top of a tepui, a table mountain so old it was here before dinosaurs. It drops so far that halfway down, it stops being water. The wind catches it. It turns into mist, into cloud, into smoke. It twists into a spiral in mid-air and just vanishes before it hits the jungle. You are seeing water that evaporates while falling. Below, there is only endless green forest for 100 kilometres. No roads. No cities. The only way to get there is a 3-day boat ride and a day of hiking. This place inspired the movie UP.
