When you're just starting, it's really easy to make mistakes since everything is a learning process. Here are some things I've seen very commonly from new artists that I recommend avoiding. 1. Applying to every single event- Not every event will be profitable. It will be harder to make profit when you're at a smaller show meant for locals especially if you're traveling. For example, I don't recommend traveling to a small local show let's say in Florida if you're coming from the west coast. Your expenses will be high and most likely will not be profitable. Plus, you are taking a spot away from a local. 2. Getting into a con without researching- Often times when acceptances roll out I often see new artists ask if a con is worth it AFTER they get accepted. The reason why this is not recommended is because Artist alley is overaturated and there are thousands of apps. Juries take months to have to sit through an application. This causes bloat from the amount of applications, but can also be unprofessional if you are constantly denying acceptances because you realize you can't afford going or it's not worth going. Many cons have reported closing apps early due to the influx of applications. 3. Applying to out of country events- if you are inexperienced, vending in another country is not as simple as taking your square reader and boom done. There's a LOT of paperwork involved, visa, tax documents, and opening a bank within that country. Also, many countries don't get a lot of cons. I often hear from Canadian artists that it's hard to get into their own shows and that a lot of the spots have been taken by American artists. Also, note that your square account will not work in another country due to your account being tied to your country's bank. 4. Going to events that is not your audience- Some events are very specific to a type of audience. For example, fighting game events have a very niche community. I've seen instances where artists with no fighting game merch get accepted, vend, and tell me the event wasn't worth it because their merch does not cater to the audience. WHEN NOT TO ASK FOR PICTURES FROM A COSPLAYER AT ANIME CONS!! ☆ HEY HEY HEY STARLINGS, I'm Kuro Senpie, and I'm a Master Class Award-Winning Cosplayer! I'm here to give you tips and tricks for cosplay, Con experience, and just Otaku stuff in general! ☆ 1. WHEN YOU SEE THEM EATING!! Look.. I get you get excited to see your favorite character on the floor, and you want a picture. BUT PLEASE LET THESE COSPLAYERS EAT🙏🏾😭That could be their first meal of the day, and they are trying to process the day. So if you see them eating, just leave them ALONE!! 2. YOU CATCH THEM IN A PHOTOSHOOT! Again, I know you get excited to see your favorite characters. Probably more awesome seeing them in action. BUT if you see them don't a photoshoot, just wait until it's over or when they take a break. I say this because almost all photoshoots are on a schedule. Most are 10-15min. So both the cosplayer and photographers need that time. 3. EVEN YOU SEE THEM WALKING BACK TO THEIR ROOM!! It has been a long day, and the cosplayer feet are probably swollen, have a massive headache, are hungry, and just want to sleep. So if you see if a cosplay look obviously tired and heading back to recharge, PLEASE LET THEM!
