I love anoles and so should you! There’s so many reasons why this group of lizards is so fascinating, but the dewlap is an obvious and defining feature of the genus Anolis. Majority of anoles have a “dewlap” which is just a flap of skin on their throat that can be extended. They use this dewlap for territorial displays, mating rituals, and other forms of communication. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Manually extending dewlaps does not hurt the anoles or cause any sort of discomfort; it’s no different than lifting your arm if it was relaxed. I moved all my reptiles to a new facility, and @zoomedlabs hooked it up with a ton of new enclosures! All the anoles got upgraded to larger enclosures, but one problem… I had to move the animals over quickly, so they are set up pretty minimalistic and not fancy, planted, or pretty! (You can see more about my move in a long form video I just posted on YT@HerpTime) This first enclosure is a bit of an experiment, using a new method for making a quick background, and trying out a strategy to easily collect eggs. Even if the egg collection idea doesn’t work, the Anolis grahami going in this enclosure never bother their babies. What do you all think: how should I do the rest of these new Zoo Med enclosures so that they’re planted and naturalistic, while still work for breeding? It’s all one big experiment, so any suggestions will be considered! The plan is to make all the enclosures as planted and pretty as possible, without sacrificing too much of the baby lizard production. Introducing the smallest anole species I now keep: Anolis isolepis, commonly known as the dwarf green anole. And what better way to show them off than by tong feeding them some vitabugs from @timberlinelivepetfoods! These individuals came captive bred from Europe, but the species is originally native to Cuba. A true dwarf, only getting about 3 inches long, with strangely disproportionately large bobbleheads. They come from both high and low elevation, so can tolerate a wide range of temperatures. And as you can see, they love their insects, but other keepers have had great success feeding them premixed gecko diets… which I’ll try next! Such a fun species to add to the collection and I’m sure their popularity will only surge because this is a truly tiny anole with a giant personality! I’m always messing around with animal diets. Lately I’ve been experimenting with freeze dried grasshoppers and frozen frog legs puréed and mixed with agar gel poured into moulds. Grasshoppers would be enjoyed by every species I keep, but most won’t touch freeze dried except the turtles. The giant anoles, Pacman frog and turtles all heavily prey on frogs in the wild but are hit and miss with frozen thawed frog legs. I’m offering a 6:1 grasshopper-BSFL puree mix in the video and you can so far it’s being pretty well received. I’m using agar instead of gelatine because I find the agar holds better, making tong feeding easier.
