This is a spitbite test plate I made a little while ago for my newest wave etching (sneak peek at the end // images and video coming soon). The initial line etch wasn’t nearly as dark/tonal as I wanted, so I ended up doing several rounds of spitbite (upon recommendation from an etching friend) to achieve darker tones and more depth. I’m happy to say it saved the plate! 🖤 Spitbite is an aquatint technique where an acid solution is painted directly onto an aquatinted metal plate (here I have a copper plate with a rosin aquatint). Traditionally, saliva or gum arabic is mixed with the acid to break the surface tension and control viscosity, allowing for fluid brushstrokes. Here I’ve mixed gum arabic into my ferric chloride solution. Enjoy this printmaking test sesh! 🧪 #spitbite #aquatint #etching #printmaking #copperetching #testplate #processvideo #gravure #eauforte

I printed these last February but waited until the books were out in the world to share! Edition of 26 lettered copies (and 8 Special Edition)— fully subscribed before publication.
