Archives aren’t just for museums, libraries, and government buildings. They live in our homes, our phones, and the everyday moments that shape our lives, and your phone already holds the foundations of a personal archive. Photos, videos, texts, voice notes, voicemails, etc., all hold memories that connect us to our families, our communities, and our histories. In the first episode of History Starts at Home, we’re starting with the basics: What is an archive, and how can you start building one today? Because preserving our stories helps ensure a richer, more expansive history for the future. When you’re ready to get started use these 3 simple steps: 1️⃣ Make a short list of memories you want to archive 2️⃣ Create a folder on your phone or cloud storage called “Memory Archive” 3️⃣ Start adding photos and videos from the moments that matter to you to this folder #archiving #archives #digitalarchives #familyarchives #memories

Over the past two weeks, I’ve had the honor of learning the bichromate over platinum and palladium photographic process from artist Diana Bloomfield at Penland School of Craft. Working with these historic techniques offered me space to reflect on how stories are preserved—and what it means to hold memory in a form that resists time. Unlike silver gelatin prints, which are prone to fading, platinum and palladium prints are among the most archival photographic processes—capable of lasting over 1,000 years. Developed in the late 19th century as a fine art alternative to silver-based photography, the process uses negatives and hand-coated paper to create images with luminous tonal depth. Because the image becomes embedded into the fibers of the paper, each print feels like a relic, a vessel for memory. While I was creating these pieces, I was also reading Susan Sontag’s, On Photography (1977), which examines the complex ways photographs shape our understanding of memory, mortality, and truth. She states, “All photographs are memento mori… to take a photograph is to participate in another person’s (or thing’s) mortality.” Her words lingered in my mind, and through each step of the process: mixing chemistry, brushing emulsions, and using light to draw out images, like historias surfacing from silence. This idea guided my work as I sought to archive both personal and collective histories—the intimacy of memory and the inherited stories that shape us. These images, many taken on a 35mm film and others on my Fuji digital. They were printed on Platinum Hahnemuhle Platinum Rag Fine Art Paper. Deepest of gratitude to @penlandschool for awarding me the David Rayfield Scholarship to attend this workshop, to @dhbloomfieldphoto_dinahlee for sharing your wisdom, and to @sheri.hill27 for assisting. In an increasingly digital and interconnected world, the process of archiving visual material has changed dramatically. No longer limited to just libraries, museums, or books, archives now exist in abundance across digital spaces; whether you're interested in 18th Century folk art or The Simpson's cinematography, you can be sure that there's an archive out there for you. With greater access to materials, stories and communities, the ways in which creatives are archiving is becoming increasingly more inventive, intriguing and inspired - and we wanted to know more. i think of art as a way of archiving our lives. Just as humans once felt the need to discover language, we make art out of that same need- to express and communicate, but also to remember.
