Bit of inspiration for the start of the New Year! When I first encountered the idea of becoming an archivist I was told by my academic advisor at university that I should drop the idea and focus on ‘a more attainable career path.’ They cited the lack of opportunities within the sector and the level of experience required to even become a qualified archivist. And like the good student I was I decided to completely ignore what they said and work towards becoming an archivist. I will not pretend it has been an easy journey, getting into the heritage sector is a real challenge and there were plenty of obstacles that I had to overcome. But I can look back at that journey and be proud of myself for managing to make it into the archival sector, and I still have room to grow within the profession. I think when people discuss goals for the year it’s easy to talk down your desires as unobtainable, especially when we talk about a career in heritage. But it’s important to remember that denying yourself the opportunity to work in a field you feel passionate about is to deny yourself the ability to share your passions. So although you may encounter many roadblocks on your journey, it’s important to keep going because you may then reach the role you had longed for! Women in GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) ⭐️ today I visited the V&A Museum National Art Library again to do more research of uncatalogued 19th century letters for my non-fiction biography book. I am technically a woman in GLAM though bc I work and volunteer at my local archives... I find these behind the scenes videos from big brands so fascinating. Especially when you realize that the concept of having an archive by brand is a fairly recent thing. Many brands have only started to have archives in the last couple of decades. There are some large heritage brand that did keep fairly decent records especially if they were Couture houses but even they have missing years. Rebuilding and keeping a proper archive is a huge and expensive endeavor. Just the set up in this video alone represents an unbelievable amount of money and then they’re also keeping on staff people to keep all of that up to date. As a vintage dealer I often get contacted by brands looking for specific pieces to fill out their archives. And I can tell you, truthfully that I have had request for certain pieces where I was told that there was no budget if that piece could be found. Archiving can be a very serious ! And there’s always a bit of a satisfactory feeling when you find that wanted items and have a piece go “home” 🥹 These videos also make me want to have a system like these places do, but that is a dream that I know will never come true. That set up is big big BIG money and shows just how serious keeping archives are for a brand!
