As cool as everyone’s favorite #coopergraddad was, it is well-documented* that there was at least one rule in our house: don’t put your hands on the walls. I mean, I get it. Grubby little kid hands can be murder on a pristine white wall. And besides, walls are for art. But, what if you used said little kid hands to DRAW on the wall? Friends, that is a loophole that I never dared test. And so, when you watch this clip of the artist Dominant Dansby talking about his brother drawing on the walls, you will understand why my normally calm, cool, collected host face betrays a mix of wild-eyed fear and years-old curiosity. Childhood rules being broken aside, this is a fabulous conversation for anyone grappling with creative focus; lovers of Jazz, collage, abstraction; people with mindfulness practices looking to trade notes; older siblings wondering, “what in the world?!;” and of course, lovers of the great brick city, Newark, NJ. You don’t have to care about what society wants you to be, you don’t have to care about what people think of you. It’s crazy when people discover that they have actual free will within a moral compass. You can have fun in your life and be free, you just have to let go of the pressures that people and society put on you.
