Most artists focus only on doing — making the art, fixing the art, pushing the art forward. But there’s another side to creation that’s just as important: absence.
Art making is a dance between two states: visitation and absence.
Visitation is when you’re in it, brush moving, energy flowing, making changes. But after a while, the returns diminish. You stop seeing clearly. That’s when it’s time to step away.
It’s in the absence, the pause, the space, the time away, that clarity forms. When you return, you see what needs to happen next.
Great art isn’t made in one sitting. It’s built over time through cycles of showing up, stepping back, and showing up again.
Do you “pre~game” your art? I set up the camera for my priming before art making (because: Reels 😆). It’s actually a whole thing now. What are your rituals?

This is my art making, in real time. It’s a slow process and not much happens in 30seconds. My videos usually show the process sped up, and I love making those videos, but I think it skews our perspective on how much time is involved in creating many artworks. It’s nice to slow down every now and then 💕
