Enhance portrait with Reference and FaceRef Studio 👩🎨💡
Pairing your 2D portraits with a precise 3D lighting setup changes everything. Instead of guessing plane changes, eye socket depths, or warm bounce light across the jawline, use FaceRef Studio to dial in your exact light source before you paint:
1️⃣ Set your character’s head angle and primary light direction.
2️⃣ Read the exact plane transitions (nose bridge, cheekbones, brow line).
3️⃣ Paint with confident value contrast, subsurface warmth, and specular highlights!
Try FaceRef Studio or grab my full portrait masterclasses via the link in bio 🔗
Do you light your portraits from imagination, photos, or 3D models? Let me know in the comments!

Post 39 How I use 3D references without copying them ✨
For this one, I used a 3D face model to help me understand the angle, structure and placement of the features, but I didn’t try to reproduce everything exactly.
I mainly use the reference as a guide, then simplify, change proportions and make my own choices until the drawing feels more like my style. I’m still learning too, and exercises like this really help me understand what I’m looking at instead of just copying it

Post 40 How I build hair before adding details ✨
For this one, I wanted to show how I think about hair before jumping straight into individual strands. I usually start with the overall shape and volume, then break the hairstyle into bigger sections before adding the smaller details.
I’m still learning too, but thinking about hair as big shapes first has made the process much easier for me !! Hopefully this can help you too!
