Is that backer board asbestos?! HELP ME
I unknowingly started demoing a wall that contained asbestos 🥲
We’d already had the professionals safely remove all the asbestos from our home… or so we thought. Fast forward to kitchen demo day & we soon realised that there was infact some asbestos remaining🫠
Certainly a lesson to always wear the correct protective gear incase.

How to handle asbestos duct tape safely! 🏗️🛑
Spotting asbestos seam tape on legacy metal HVAC ductwork can be alarming, but understanding the difference between encapsulated and friable asbestos is key.
Here is how to manage asbestos tape safely in your home:
🔹 Undisturbed = Safe: Asbestos fibers are only hazardous when friable (disturbed into airborne dust). If left alone, intact tape poses minimal immediate risk.
🔹 Encapsulation: For extra peace of mind, coating exposed tape with a heavy-duty sealing primer (like KILZ) locks the fibers in place and prevents deterioration.
🔹 Abatement Before Modification: If your project involves replacing, cutting, or moving ductwork, you MUST hire a certified abatement team to remove it safely.
Never sand, scrape, or disturb asbestos materials yourself!

An electrician found asbestos in our garage. Or so we thought.
We’d booked an electric charger to be fitted after years of living in a rental and charging the car out and about which cost us a fortune. Hilariously it was one of the initial changes we were most looking forward to about the house.
The electrician took one look at our ceiling and told us there was too much asbestos risk and that he couldn’t fit it. Instead of a charger we had to pay for a specialist to test the whole house, who said to fear the worst and that the removal cost would be extortionate. We genuinely had to sit on our hands and worry that phase one of the renovation would be over before it had even begun.
We could not believe that the results came back clear. We’ve now booked in the builders and the charger has finally gone in!
We naively thought none of these issues would happen to us. Moral of the story is to budget for the surprises because they are definitely coming!

And the worst of all kitchen trends, which we are NOT doing in 2026, is quartz. My biggest design ick of all time is fake stone. And while not quite like asbestos causing harm once installed, quartz is now known to cause fatal lung disease in fabricators who breathe its aerosolized dust. Why would you want a countertop made of dust and glue anyway?!
Kitchen and bathroom designs today should focus on authentic, durable materials that do no harm.
In the 1950s, asbestos was widely promoted as a safe, modern “miracle material” because of its strength, insulation properties, and resistance to fire.
It was used in homes, schools, factories, and everyday products, and was often presented as a breakthrough in construction and manufacturing.
At the time, the serious health risks were not fully recognised or were heavily downplayed, including the later discovered link between asbestos exposure and diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.
Over time, as medical evidence built up, asbestos shifted from being seen as a revolutionary material to one of the most significant occupational health hazards in modern history.
It remains a powerful example of how something once considered safe and innovative can later be reclassified as dangerous through scientific understanding. 🏗️⚠️🧠
