AVALANCHE ALERT! 🚨 ⚠️ A serious avalanche incident unfolded at Stubai Glacier, Austria, on Thursday morning, November 27th, when eight skiers were caught in a massive slide in off-piste terrain. The avalanche struck around 9:15 AM in the freeride area east of Daunscharte, sweeping down onto slope 9, Kogelferner. Authorities believe the slide was triggered by skiers in the area. Fortunately, no guests on marked pistes were affected. What followed was a massive rescue operation involving 250 personnel. Mountain rescue teams, alpine police, avalanche dog units, emergency helicopters, 90 German soldiers training nearby, 60 Czech and Polish mountain rescuers, Stubai Glacier staff, and approximately 100 civilian volunteers deployed probe lines and conducted systematic searches of the avalanche debris. All eight individuals managed to free themselves before rescue teams arrived. Five escaped without injury. Three sustained injuries requiring medical attention - arm, knee, and shoulder injuries - with two airlifted to Hall Hospital. The Austrian Alpine Association has issued a serious warning: avalanche danger in off-piste terrain is currently elevated. Stubai received 70 centimeters of fresh snow that hasn’t bonded to the base layer - a dangerous early season condition. Critical to note: daily avalanche forecasting for Tyrol and Salzburg hasn’t begun yet and won’t start until this weekend. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the real dangers in off-piste terrain. Proper avalanche safety equipment, training, and current condition awareness are not optional - they’re essential. AVY BITES - Avalanche Education If it didn't slide does it mean we were right? When do we know if we are right or wrong? Reality is we make lots of micro mistakes in a day but with very little consequence. Our mistakes only get exposed when we get that tangible feedback either from others or the mountains. In this case was it the fact they dropped the cliff that it triggered? Or would it have gone if they had skied through one of the entrances. This is what we don't know and only learn in retrospect. If they had skied around and it didn't slide did they make the right decision? We must work hard to minimize our mistakes and not let them compound on eachother. Often compounding mistake lead to problems. Get in the habit of debriefing on your groups every day. Ask yourself when you were the most at risk? Do you do it right? Or did you just get lucky...
