Huge congratulations to Joshua Seftel (Alum ’00, ’01, ’02, ’14) on his Academy Award nomination for ALL THE EMPTY ROOMS — Nominated for Documentary Short Film at the Oscars.
In this deeply affecting film, Joshua shifts the conversation around gun violence away from politics and toward something undeniably human: the empty bedrooms, the silence, the children who are not coming home.
As Steve Hartman shares in the piece, “What we need to talk about is the child that’s not here anymore.”
“Our hope is that this film can reframe gun violence not as a political issue but as a deeply human issue where every single person can agree on one thing: Our children deserve to be safe in school.” ~ Joshua
ALL THE EMPTY ROOMS asks us to witness — to stand in those spaces, to feel what’s been lost, and to remember that storytelling can move us toward empathy, responsibility, and change.
Your support will help even more people feel the impact of Dominic, Hallie, Jackie, and Gracie’s stories. Congratulations, Joshua and team, on this powerful and necessary work 🙌❤️

The #AcademyAward nominated All the Empty Rooms follows news correspondent Steve Hartman (@stevehartmancbs) and photographer Lou Bopp (@loubopp) on a seven-year project to document the absence, memory, and families living with the unseen aftermath of school shootings. In a country where more kids and teens die from guns than any other cause, these empty rooms speak in ways statistics never can.

For years, my job was to find the positive angle after school shootings. What we need, and what we do in Academy Award-nominated @alltheemptyrooms, is to talk about the children who aren't here anymore.
I hope you'll watch. Streaming now on @netflix .

@explainingamovie teaches you something new about movies everyday!
In The End of the Tour (2015), Jesse Eisenberg plays journalist David Lipsky during his five-day road trip interviewing acclaimed author David Foster Wallace, portrayed by Jason Segel. One of the most striking parts of the film comes during Wallace’s extended monologues, where he shares his anxieties about fame, media culture, and the isolation of modern life. His words feel almost prophetic in how they foreshadow the intensifying role of technology and consumerism in shaping human identity and fulfillment.
The film, based on Lipsky’s memoir Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself, isn’t about definitive answers but about the raw, unfiltered exchange between two people—one searching for recognition, the other wary of it. Wallace’s insights on distraction and loneliness resonate deeply today, solidifying the movie as more than just a portrait of a writer, but as a meditation on the cost of attention in a rapidly shifting cultural landscape.
