Although our plan was for Lily to raise her kit, we ended up having to do so… and omg… it has been so incredibly special to raise such a confident little boi.
One of the unique things about raising an ambassador animal is that they NEED to see their keepers as their safe space. They’ll be exploring new areas, experiencing new things, and meeting new people their whole lives. If they ever get nervous, we want them to come to us to “protect” them rather than bolting or hiding. That’s why you’ll see ambassador keepers being so hands-on with their animals. It’s a bond that takes a lot of time and effort that keeps them safe and stress free. 🖤🦨
With that being said, some animals don’t feel security with their keepers through affection like this. Instead just being near you is what’s important to them or maybe their travel carrier is their safe spot to go to. It’s our responsibility to know our animals like the back of our hands, pay constant attention to their body language and react immediately based on those observations to keep building that high level of trust.
Marshmallow is at the age of constant wrestle/play. This is something he would have practiced with his siblings, but since he was a solo kit and an imprint, he wrestles and plays with us instead! This open mouth flop is what we’d see from Lily and her siblings at this age. Marshy the shark 😆
*Skunks are not pets. The point of our ambassador skunks is to educate people on the importance of native wildlife, not harming them but also leaving them wild.*

These two are the most gorgeous skunks I’ve seen, we are excited they are doing great and will be able to spread their genetics in the future! Giving them back their freedom will be an honor. They still have a couple more weeks in care though to put on some weight but so far they are meeting all requirements for release. They have an appropriate behavior towards humans, they have been successful in hunting for bugs and are healthy! .

We know you’ve been waiting to hear our baby skunk’s name. After reading through your suggestions, Animal Care and Education agreed on Thistle! She’s soft and sweet, but she has some sassy stomps!
Thistle is about 12 weeks old now. She’s still learning to be an Ambassador Animal, so we’ll start including her in programs in a very limited capacity while she gets used to people. She’s pretty comfortable being handled, and she likes milk treats, but she’s still not so sure about strange noises.
As always, we train animals at their pace and with positive, consistent reinforcement. We want every Thistle to human interaction to be positive for our little girl.

Skunks usually give plenty of warning before they spray. This little baby is showing the classic stomps and his best puffed-up pose, trying hard to look bigger and scarier. Even though he’s tiny, he looks fierce, using these moves to warn off anything that might be a threat. If he were serious, he’d turn around, point his tail, and start lunging back and forth. What’s funny is that dogs often mistake this body language for playtime!
