Prescilla Tolentino opened her first @gemmaebakeshop in Cavite, Philippines, in 1979, and it quickly became a popular bakery, eventually allowing her to open 13 shops across the Philippines. Despite the success she found, she wanted a better life for her children, so she sold 10 of the 13 shops and moved to Long Beach, where she opened Gemmae in 1993. It was a major restart, but luckily, the growing and loyal Filipino community supported her from the very beginning. Ten years ago, Catherine Tolentino took over the business from her mother. Initially, her mom didn’t want her to take over, knowing firsthand how difficult it was. She had always encouraged her children to take their own path, but Catherine didn’t want to give up the space she had grown up in, a place that felt like home and was filled with memories and people who shaped her life. If she didn’t take over, Gemmae likely would have closed. Today, Catherine keeps the menu close to the original, making sure to serve the older Filipino generation the food they remember from childhood.
