I was super lucky last night to come across an extremely rare White Spot Octopus! These incredible octopus move like liquid and disappear into the sand in what can be a blink of the eye. In the sea, someone is always watching... Flounders are unique among fish, because they swim sideways! In order to be flat against the sand, they lay on their sides. But that comes with a problem: what happens to the eye that is left buried in the sand? Well, evolution took care of that. They start life as normal fish, however, as they grow, one of the eyes literally migrates to the other side of its face. When they start hanging out next to sand, their eyes are already on the same side of their bodies, so swimming sideways is no longer a problem. In some species, like this leopard flounder, the eyes are elevated, so that they stick out of the substrate, while the rest of the body remains buried. Isn't that crazy? Nocturnal immersions in the redwoods. That's what you have to do to maximize chances of seeing cool California giant salamanders and their behavior. They're among the largest salamanders in the world, the terrestrial adults are mottled and lack gills but I've photographed those before - the goal this time was aquatic paedomorphic or neotenic adults, who stay underwater in cold freshwater streams their whole lives, never lose their gills and reach impressive sizes. I was thrilled to find a pool with a bunch of big ones - this video is just a snippet. It's fun to see how tiny their gills are but they live in fast flowing well oxygenated water so they don't need much branching or surface area and just have little gill tufts. Unlike the Ambystoma species living in stagnant waters who end up having huge halos of gills. On that note, if this reel happens to get any traction and people start telling me these are axolotls I'm going to lose my mind.
