Are you struggling to create character-driven plots where the pacing doesn’t lag? Let’s talk character sketches. I use questions to quickly deepen my characters so they can drive the plot forward. I start with these three:
1. Why are they making this choice? (Maybe start with the inciting incident)
2. What consequences will this choice have?
3. What does this choice tell us about who they are?
Then ask how what’s happening in the story will impact on their character—the story should change them.
Most importantly, keep asking questions about their choices so you continue to deepen their character, and keep asking how the story changes them—there should be back and forth there.
