A few behavioural changes we've noticed during the oestrous period in our clan. These are just personal observations and may not apply to all clans. 🦡 I'd be interested to know if you've noticed any others? The biggest shift this year is that Pignut (a male that dispersed two years ago) seems to have re-joined the clan. He's got lots of new scars and appears to have lost an ear, but otherwise, he's in pretty good condition. It's likely that he got himself into a fight with Square Tail (another male) when he first arrived, as Square Tail developed an eye injury at around the same time. Fun badger fact for International Women's Day: When researchers first started to study the social lives of badgers badgers, it was predicted that there would be a clear social structure with dominant-subordinate relationships and, perhaps, a linear hierarchy (i.e., 'pecking order'). It turned out that social structure was subtle and difficult to identify. Relationships between individuals were highly changeable, certain individuals didn't monopolise larger food items or mates, and individuals didn't seem to have assigned roles. The only semblance of social structure that was found was a flow of allogrooming and alloscenting towards reproductive females. So, the IWD fun fact is that reproductive female badgers are right at the centre of badger society and everybody wants to scent and groom them. 💚 Note: This is a film taken last June that I somehow forgot to post. It's been a while since I posted an update about our Badger family in our garden. From last year we had 5 cubs and 3 adults, although I haven't recorded all together since then, 5 did appear together a few days ago, which was pleasing. You never know how many survive as the cubs are difficult to tell apart. The 3 adults are still going strong however. As always, they sometimes get on, other times not, as you will see in my film ! #badgers #mustelids #mammals
