Lake Superior is constantly under threat. Follow @protect_the_porkies to sign, petitions, etc. During Walker’s time as #Wisconsin governor, the Bad River tribal folks fought tooth and nail to get the Geotech mine placement in Northern WI to stop. After risking their lives, these native folks succeeded, and I believe it was the next year that that area—which would’ve been the country‘s largest open mine—flooded, causing a two hour driving detour from the West side of Wisconsin into the UP. That’s how bad the flood was. (I know because I went through the area two or three times that summer with all the roads washed out.) The former mayor of Hurley was killed in the flood. Roads took months to repair. Had that mine gone in, the drinking water in Northeast Wisconsin would have been undrinkable for years with all those chemicals involved in mining. The rivers and lakes and Lake superior would have been contaminated, killing wildlife and threatening humans. The reservation folks camped out in subzero temperatures & were threatened with guns, but never gave up. I am always grateful to the bad river reservation east of Ashland. Currently, even though Enbridge is found with leak after leak in their pipelines, including one this past week in Wisconsin, the tribe still struggles with poorly maintained pipelines, and the new route around the reservation will still be within the Lake superior watershed, and potentially dangerous to the drinking water if Enbridge does not up their game in maintenance. I use as much oil as the next person, but if you’re gonna be making billionaires out of people WHO DON’T LIVE HERE and all the risk goes to the rural communities in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan, you better maintain your fucking pipeline. As with health insurance companies, it’s a constant battle to get these giant corporations to care about the people and the places they are using to get rich. To see how the #anishinaabe are taking care of all of us. please check out @badriverfilm on Peacock or Apple TV & there may be some on YouTube. #warning #environmentalthreat #lakesuperiorsurfing #lakesuperior #upperpeninsula #michigan #minnesota #rurallife #ruraldemocrats
Next week marks one year since the release of “Bad River,” a documentary about how the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has been fighting Enbridge to get rid of an aging oil pipeline that could cause a catastrophe near where the river empties into Lake Superior, just east of Ashland.
With that fight still going on in court, the movie remains in demand, with more screenings being scheduled around the country—including viewings this week in Rhinelander and Superior.

Clean Wisconsin is working with attorneys for the Bad River Band and other environmental groups to challenge permits granted by the Wisconsin DNR to Enbridge’s subsidiary that allow the company to reroute its #Line5 oil pipeline through Wisconsin wetlands and waterways.
But what exactly does that entail? Clean Wisconsin attorney Evan Feinauer explains what to expect from the upcoming contested case hearing, which starts in August. Learn more about the Line 5 reroute project at the link in bio or at cleanwisconsin.org/line5.

@enbridge’s Line 6 – a 750km crude oil pipeline – spilled 70,000 gallons of oil in Wisconsin. The Line 6 oil spill was found the very same week that permits were approved for Enbridge’s Line 5 reroute, highlighting the unacceptable risks involved and the need for a responsible review process.
The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and its allies have taken legal action against the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) decision to grant the new Line 5 permits. Right now Line 5 trespasses within the boundaries of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa reservation, but the proposed reroute would cross the river outside of the reservation and still place the land, water and people at risk if – or when – an oil spill like Line 6 happens.
The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa says in the lawsuit that the approval of the permits is illegal because Enbridge didn’t show how it would minimize harm to state waterways and wetlands. Every year they hold an annual wild rice harvest, and Bad River Band members hunt and gather from the land all year.
“They failed to consider our tribe, our water quality, and the natural resources of the entire Bad River watershed. As a tribal chairman and an elder, it’s my responsibility to protect the generations still to come. That’s why we are fighting this reroute in court” said Robert Blanchard, chairman of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
