One of my favorite George Balanchine ballets to perform. “WHO CARES” The suave, the power, musicality/rhythm and coolness, exciting movement of this neoclassical ballet is beautiful.
FAVORITE PHRASE // “I think Agon as a whole is the epitome of Balanchine,” says Principal Dancer Jovani Furlan, whose favorite phrase from the ballet features the “coolness of steps, unusual musicality, the ease, and the cat-like movements” for which so much of George Balanchine’s choreography is known.
Stay tuned for Grace Scheffel’s favorite phrase, dropping next week.

Some love stories are told in steps, not words🩰💫
At the center is "Serenade" (1934), Balanchine’s first full-length ballet created in the United States. Set to Tchaikovsky and beginning with a simple tendu, the work unfolds from the feeling of an observed ballet class into something quietly poetic and deeply romantic.
Captured at Madrid’s @teatro_real, @nycballet performs an evening of works by George Balanchine and Justin Peck, moving effortlessly between classical romance and contemporary energy.

Back in the days of my Los Angeles Ballet, I had a goal. I wanted to give my hometown its first-ever fully professional classical ballet company, but one that was also unique and reflected the city's history as the entertainment capitol of the world. To do this I was aided by George Balanchine, my boss, mentor, and friend. He gave me, free of charge, access to his entire repertory, plus he actually came out to LA to help me fundraise. For my part, I made over fifty new ballets to keep the audiences entertained by ballets they couldn't see anywhere else, and to develop my talented dancers. Nothing improves a dancer's technique, as well as their artistry, as to have new works created especially for them. It worked for ten years until downtown politics (you know the story if you've read my autobiography), forced my board to close. One of my most successful "pop" ballets was CHARLESTON. This happy work received raves in the NY TIMES, and NEWSWEEK Magazine on its debut in NYC and the 2nd time we played there at the Joyce Theater with a slightly different cast. (If a ballet can work with a different cast you know it has lasting value). This ballet was later taken into the repertoire of companies in Europe and America, so it had "legs." Here's some excerpts for your pleasure. Not every ballet has to be serious. Sometimes to entertain is enough. Do you like this Pas de deux?
FAVORITE PHRASE // “This is my favorite moment because it’s very romantic and the movement is very lyrical, and almost adagio, which is not typical for a male role,” says Soloist David Gabriel about his favorite phrase from George Balanchine’s Ballade.
Don’t miss Sara Adams’ favorite phrase, dropping next week.

Soloist Preston Chamblee shares his favorite phrase from the culmination of Diamonds—the final movement of George Balanchine’s Jewels: “It’s this feeling of camaraderie and unity. The feeling of doing it is so unlike anything that’s ever happened to me in my life.”
Stay tuned—there are many more favorite phrases to come.
