Planning a trip to Japan and dreaming of wandering through Kyoto’s iconic bamboo forests? 🌿 Here’s the difference between the famous one you’ve seen all over IG… and the peaceful one just a short walk away.
✨ The Reveal:
That quiet, empty bamboo path you saw in our reel? It wasn’t Arashiyama… it was Adashino Bamboo Forest, only a 20-minute walk from the crowds.
If you want those serene, no-one-else-in-your-shot bamboo photos, head to Adashino right at opening (or a little before!).
🎋 Arashiyama Bamboo Grove (Kyoto’s most famous bamboo forest)
– Hours: Open 24/7
– Cost: Free
– Best for: Iconic Kyoto experience, easy access, nearby shops + Tenryu-ji Temple
– What to know: Always busy, especially from 8–11 am; trains drop visitors right into the district
– Photo tip: Sunrise is your best chance for fewer crowds, but it’s rarely empty
🎍 Adashino Bamboo Forest (the peaceful alternative 20 min away)
– Hours: 9:00–16:00 (varies slightly by season)
– Cost: ~¥500 per person
– Best for: Quiet paths, no crowds, beautiful light through the bamboo
– What to know: Located within Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple grounds, closes early, fewer tour groups
– Photo tip: Arrive at or before opening for dreamy, empty-path photos — this is the secret to crowd-free bamboo shots
If Japan is on your bucket list, save this for your Kyoto itinerary 🗺️🇯🇵

Two hidden bamboo forests in kyoto🎋
The bamboo grove in Arashiyama is undoubtedly beautiful, but it’s always crowded, making it nearly impossible to take a photo without people in the background, right?
Instead, why not visit these two alternative bamboo groves in Kyoto?

KYOTO and What Was Actually Worth It 🇯🇵 Kyoto is a beautiful city with so much to offer. It can feel overwhelming trying to balance traditional Japan with modern Japan, and you do not want to waste time visiting the wrong things.
I spent a few days trying as much as I could that I had seen on Instagram and heard about from friends. Here is what I actually enjoyed and what was not worth it 👇
Fushimi Inari ✅ Incredible if you beat the crowds. Go early. Late afternoon crowds completely kill the magic.
Bamboo Forest ✅ Worth it early, not worth it late. Convenient stop near other great spots, but timing matters.
Gion ✅ Traditional, atmospheric, and easy to get lost in. One of those places that makes you forget to take your phone out.
Kenninji ✅ Calm, beautiful, and surprisingly uncrowded. One of our favorite unexpected stops.
Kamo River ✅ Perfect for a stroll any time of day. Always peaceful and picturesque.
Katsura River ✅ Worth a walk, especially near the Bamboo Forest. Much better with foliage than in colder months.
Jojakko Ji ✅ Absolutely worth it. Beautiful views, a double pagoda, and a small entrance fee.
Okochi Sanso Garden ⚠️ Only worth it right at opening. Peaceful when empty, skippable if crowded.
Nishiki Market ❌ Food is fine, but the crowds are intense. Shoulder to shoulder walking makes it not worth the hassle.
% Arabica ❌ Cool location, but it is still just coffee. Not worth waiting in long lines.
Pokemon Center ❌ Smaller than Tokyo’s with fewer standout features. Easy skip if you have already been.
Viral matcha spots ❌ Similar to Tokyo, matcha tastes the same everywhere. Not worth waiting in line.
Second hand luxury shopping ⚠️ Good quality, but unnecessary if you shopped in Tokyo. Same deals, smaller selection.
Chao Chao Gyoza ✅ Some of the best gyoza we have ever had. Popular for a reason and absolutely lived up to the hype.
Yuzugen Pontocho ✅ Excellent food and atmosphere. Worth trying if you can get a reservation.
Tohka Saikan ✅ The oldest Chinese restaurant in Kyoto. Legendary spot and a great multi course experience.

The highlight of my Osaka/Kyoto trip
Was taking this rickshaw to the bamboo forest. Lucas was fantastic, more than a guide and a photographer. You felt like it was your long distance friend who you have not seen in a while -who is bringing you on a tour in a new city.
The whispers of the bamboo forest, hearing Lucas’ childhood memories , the delicious scent of the uji matcha and the warmth company of everyone there -these are the memories I will never forget ❤️ @ebisuya_arashiyama

Deep in a bamboo forest at dawn, a golden ray of sunlight filters through the bamboo leaves, casting light on the ground covered with freshly fallen bamboo leaves. A young deer bows its head to forage, as the camera slowly moves forward. The scene exudes a realistic natural style, with light mist adding a sense of tranquility and serenity.
