The Barbican Centre is due to close for a year from the end of June 2028 to June 2029 for a £191 million renewal project designed to upgrade its ageing Grade II-listed fabric ahead of its 50th anniversary. During this period, most theatre, music, and gallery programming inside the main complex will pause while foyers, lakeside terraces, and the conservatory are refurbished, but the Beech Street cinemas and public access routes through the estate are expected to remain open and partner organisations such as the London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Shakespeare Company will present work at other venues across London.

The Barbican is one of London’s most interesting examples of Brutalist architecture. After World War II, the area was destroyed during the Blitz in the 1940s, so in the 1960s and ’70s, architects decided to build something totally different. A whole little city inspired by Mediterranean towns, with gardens, terraces, and walkways up above the streets.
The buildings are made from raw concrete with a cool woodgrain texture, which makes them feel a bit less harsh than you might expect. People used to think it looked cold and rough, but now it’s seen as a bold and creative way to rebuild after the war.
The Barbican Centre opened in 1982 and today the area is a buzzing cultural spot and a really popular place to live, with apartments selling for over £800,000 and well into the millions. It’s more than just concrete, it’s a symbol of new ideas and fresh starts.
What do you think about the Barbican?

*Late post* I was so happy to be invited by @kes4ng & @trippin.world to Frequencies and have an intimate viewing of the incredible exhibition FEEL THE SOUND alongside a curated panel talk with the legendary @mykkiblanco, @rat.section ,@nkisili and @scratchclart moderated by @nihalelaasar, they went deep into how sound defines identity, builds connections and re-imagines the limits of tech.
Sound has never been seen like before. The exhibition reimagines what sound feels like and the role it plays in culture and all things sensory!
Closes this SUNDAY! Go see it!

We went on the Barbican's official Architecture Tour. The estate didn’t suddenly become less confusing - but it finally made sense why.
The tour guide, Kamil, had been living, studying, and working in the Barbican for the past five years.

@barbicancentre
