This is how our homesteads evolved from the 1600s as the Basotho’s were exposed to and influenced by the west… Mostly the English and the Dutch. Some may see these homes as primitive I see them as a testament of our connection with the land and all that is within it. I also see our ability to adapt to change but still retain our essence. Today we live in very different spaces and therefore lead very different lives… what stood out to me the most about being at this museum was how peaceful it was, the beauty of being in harmony with the land is something that will always ignite my soul. Also fun fact, the first homestead is what the wives of the chief would each get for themselves and their children. It consists of a hut for the kitchen, a hut for the house and a hut for guests. EACH wife had her own compound containing 3 huts… now THAT is what polygamy was about back then… just saying… the wives did not share a compound, let alone a home. #powerofwellness #heritage #basotho
