A handsome Polkadot Batfish batfishing. That little nose dongle is actually a lure and the batfish is casting a chemical attractant out into the water, likely in hopes of attracting its favorite prey: the ever so delectable fireworm ~~~~~ Sony A1, Tamron 90mm Macro, 2x Kraken Sports Hydra 12k Lights, Kraken 7” Monitor ~~~~~ #batfish #krakensports #blueheronbridge #underwatervideo #underwaterlights

It is completely understandable why people think it's fake or AI-generated! Between the human-like "makeup" lips and the fact that it literally walks on four legs, the red-lipped batfish looks exactly like the kind of bizarre creature a text-to-video AI model would invent. However, the red-lipped batfish is a 100% real, biologically documented species that was first scientifically described decades before AI even existed. The red-lipped batfish (Ogcocephalus darwini) is a strange bottom-dwelling marine fish famous for its bright, lipstick-red lips. Their striking crimson pout is thought to help with species recognition and mate attraction in dim ocean waters. They grow up to 25 to 40 centimeters (10 to 16 inches) long. They have a light brown back with a dark stripe, a flat white belly, and rough, sandpaper-like skin covered in tiny spines. They are terrible swimmers. Instead, they use their modified pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins like legs to walk along the ocean floor. They live primarily in the Pacific Ocean around the Galápagos Islands and off Peru. They typically stay at depths ranging from 3 to 76 meters (10 to 250 feet). Related to anglerfish, they have a small horn-like structure on their head called an illicium. When mature, it extends a special lure that attracts small fish, crabs, and shrimp. They eat small fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and worms. They pose no threat to people and lack any venom or defensive toxins.
Batfish acting rather… batty 🤔 I have no idea why batfish are so comfortable swimming upside down, or why some decide to swim the right side up and others flipped?! But it is very disorienting to film 😂 #batfish #oceanlife #marinelife
