Sand dollars are marine animals related to sea urchins and starfish, belonging to a group called echinoderms that move and feed using thousands of tiny tube feet and spines covering their bodies. The flat white disc most people find on the beach is the dried exoskeleton of a dead sand dollar, called a test, which is what remains after the soft tissue and spines decompose. Live sand dollars are covered in short velvety spines that appear to move continuously and are typically found in shallow coastal waters where they bury themselves just below the surface of the sand to feed on organic particles. The distinctive holes and petal shaped markings on the test are structural features of the skeleton rather than decorative patterns. #ocean #nature #beach #animals #outdoors
Beach Treasure Hunt: What Did I Find in Sand?
I found this lovely piece of Whitby jet washed up under a large piece of metal on the beach 🦴 Jet is fossilised wood, preserved in a unique way over millions of years, and has been used in jewellery for centuries. Always a great find along this coast. To purchase your own fossil from the Yorkshire coast, check out @buyafossil or click the link in my profile description. #fossilhunting #whitbyjet #fossilwood #yorkshirecoast #buyafossil

Another awesome beach find by @fossilgreek as he hunts the shores of coastal Virginia in areas known to have shark teeth and other prehistoric marine fossils! Even though this is 100% a juvenile Megalodon shark tooth, there is a 100% chance that people still think Megalodon shark teeth are only massive sizes. However, all animals start as smaller babies, so even infant and unborn Meg teeth can be found that are much smaller than this one. Another way to identify this as a Meg includes the fact that it has the gumline band in between the root and the enamel, called a bourlette which other species don’t have like this. #SHRKco #sharktooth #megalodon #prehistoric #ancienthistory
We placed this paper nautilus temporarily in one of our paua tanks to monitor its condition and give it the best chance to recover. It will be returned to its natural habitat shortly. Finding a live paper nautilus washed ashore is extremely rare, and survival in these conditions is unlikely without intervention. Our goal is simple: protect, care for it, and return it safely. Follow along to see what happens next 🌀 #PaperNautilus #OceanLife #MarineConservation #PauaFarm #ArapawaBluePearls
