People know where my inspiration to race came from. But behind the spotlight, helping me turn that dream into something real, was Curt. When I walked away from football and decided I was going racing, not everyone was convinced it was the right decision. I was still in college and didn’t have much money, but Curt made the decision that he was going to help me do it. Those early years weren’t glamorous. We would meet in Dillon late at night, haul a borrowed trailer to the race and sometimes not reach our $55 motel room until 2 or 3 in the morning. A few hours later, we were back up at 5 or 6 to park the trailer and get ready for qualifying. It was rough, but Curt kept showing up. He encouraged me, kept me grounded and believed in what we were building before there were wins or championships to prove it. Since 2011, he has missed only a handful of races. Year after year, the program improved—and Curt remained the steady presence through all of it. I’ll never forget Bear Valley in 2024. After winning my first King title, I told him, “I could quit and go home now and not care.” Curt looked at me and said, “Well, that’s when you do your best—so go win Mod.” I left the line with a carefree, go-win attitude and came home with two King titles that day. It was a goal I had started to believe might be out of reach, but Curt and the team behind me helped make it possible. Crew chief. Stepdad. And for all these years, the guy working behind the spotlight. Thank you, Curt. I can’t wait for another season.
