This post is going to be a hot take: Dog friendly spaces are an earned privilege, not a right. Let’s talk about it. Every year there are fewer ball fields, patios, trails, parks, and public spaces that allow dogs. And honestly… it’s not hard to see why. When you pack up your dog and bring them into a space meant primarily for humans, their behavior is your responsibility. So are their leash manners. Their reactions to strangers, kids, food, other dogs. And yes, their mental state too. A stressed, reactive, overwhelmed dog doesn’t belong in a crowded public environment. Not because they’re a bad dog, but because it’s not fair to them or the people around them. Dog-friendly access only continues when dog owners show that their dogs can exist calmly and safely in human spaces. If we want to keep being welcomed in these places, we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard. Train your dog. Advocate for their comfort. And choose environments they’re actually ready for.
