Recently spent a few days in the Dordogne and wow… what a spot. We wandered the medieval streets of Sarlat, took in the river views at La Roque-Gageac, and explored the cliffside castle in Beynac. Scruffy dogs aside, Beynac Castle is definitely worth the visit. 🏰
Built in the 12th century to control the Dordogne River, it spent centuries playing tug-of-war between the French and English.
Today, you get to climb its stone staircases, wander rooms that saw real knights, and stand on the ramparts for one of the best views in the valley.
You’ll also learn quite a bit about the castle’s connection to Richard the Lionheart. (He besieged it, and later died from a crossbow wound nearby. YIKES.)
It’s dramatic, historic, and just a little bit moody, just like me.
This is one of the best stops on any Dordogne trip!

This fairytale village sits right on the Dordogne river, with stunning views from every corner.
Ducks are a big part of life here. 🦆 In Dordogne, duck (especially foie gras and confit de canard) is a local speciality, so you’ll see duck-themed gifts everywhere.
From carved wooden ducks and rose petal jelly in the gift shops to rose ice cream that everyone raves about in this region!
We tried the rose ice cream next to Restaurant Hôtel du Château from the artisan Roland Manouvrier, a "Maitre Artisan Glacier" (Master Artisan Ice Cream Maker). 🍦😋 Apparently rose flavours are quite popular here because of all the rose gardens in Dordogne.
Don’t miss visiting the Château de Beynac, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in France (not to be confused with Bergerac town nearby!). 🏰 Parking is available below the château, then a steep walk up.
🕰 Opening times: Daily from 10am – 7pm (last entry 45 min before closing)
💶 Entry fee: Around €10 per adult
We also spotted 📍 La Petite Tonnelle, a cute restaurant tucked inside an old stone building, but sadly they were closed when we visited. Definitely saving it for next time!

We got in love of Beynac, stunning beautiful village found on the banks of the River Dordogne at South of France.
As you go up its medieval narrow streets offer another splendid view.
On the rivers edge you get some lovely views with the river, often full of canoes, a long stretch of wonderful stone houses and rising above the village
