This Sailfish got so fired as it was trying to eat our bait that we ended up lassoing it around its bill and hooking it in its sail. These fish are always so fun to catch and showcase another example of the variety of the fishery we have from Key West to the Dry Tortugas!

Sailfish, considered to be the fastest fish in the ocean. It has been recorded at speeds around 70 mph. We used to see these fish in high numbers while diving in different locations around the world, but their numbers have been drastically reduced due to many factors, most notably overfishing.
Sailfish work together to collect/push their prey into a baitball to feed. The action is fast paced with predators closing in from every angle. Depending on the size of the baitball this action can last for hours with other species joining in. Oftentimes, birds, marine mammals, and sharks will partake in the event. It is quite a scene to behold.
